BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A man threatened to beat his brother to death with a baseball bat after his brother refused him a drink, officials said.

Jose Ortiz made threats against his brother, Luis Ortiz, who was cooking dinner in his home at 441 Cherokee St., Bethlehem, at 5:30 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Jose Ortiz picked up the bat after Luis had refused him a drink because he was already drunk, officials said, adding that the two had quarreled a half-hour earlier when Luis returned home from work and found Jose "blasting" music from the stereo.

Jose kept screaming threats in Spanish even after Luis got him out of the house, and when police arrived, they saw Jose throw the bat into the back seat of a parked car, officials said.

Jose Ortiz, 44, who lives with his brother, was charged with making terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment. He was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $40,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m. May 17.
