Developers who plan to tear down the landmark King George Inn in South Whitehall may use stone from the 257-year-old building to build a wall along Cedar Crest and Hamilton boulevards.
Those developers also may build another restaurant on the site rather than a 100-room hotel, as previously announced.
Keith Zehner, the township's zoning officer, tells Channel 69 News that developers of the King George Inn site, who met with township officials Monday, may be changing course on their plans.
Zehner said putting a restaurant on the site rather than a hotel would render one zoning issue --hotel vs. motel -- irrelevant. It also would create 20 to 25 additional parking spaces.
Additionally, with the changes, stone from the King George Inn would be used to build a wall along Cedar Crest and Hamilton Boulevards, he said.
Zehner stressed all this is only a consideration and the developers may stick with their initial plan.
The zoning officer expects more details about the developer's proposal will likely be discussed at tomorrow night's township zoning hearing board meeting.
Meanwhile, an on-line petition drive to save the inn is approaching its announced goal of 2,000 signers.
This petition, which had 1,817 signatures by Monday afternoon, calls on state and federal officials "to conserve the structural integrity and prohibit the proposed demolition of the King George Inn, a nationally registered historic landmark."
Cliff McDermott, the inn's owner, closed the place in August 2012.
