Hanlon MacDonald
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

The new school year is starting off with tragedy at a local university.

Hanlon MacDonald was found dead in her off-campus student apartment Thursday evening, Lehigh University Vice Provost for Student Affairs John Smeaton said in an email to students Thursday night.

MacDonald, 19, was from Albany, N.Y., but she lived in the 500 block of Fillmore Street in Bethlehem while at Lehigh University, said Zach Lysek, the Northampton County coroner.

MacDonald was a junior bio-engineering major and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Smeaton said in the email.

Her death does not appear to have involved foul play, Lysek said.  A cause of death will be determined after the investigation is completed, he said.

An autopsy has been scheduled but a date and time are not being released.

The university offered its condolences to MacDonald's family and friends and said the Counseling Center staff is on call and will assist students in need of support.  The counselors can be reached by calling campus police at 610-758-4200.
