WILSON BOROUGH, Pa. -

Nearly 80 positions will be eliminated when a long-time Easton area bakery shuts down later this year.

Bimbo Bakeries USA announced Monday that 78 positions will be eliminated when its Wilson, Northampton Co., bakery closes.

Bimbo did not provide an exact closing date for the plant.

Officials with Bimbo said there were many aspects with the aging plant that led to the decision to close.

“This was a difficult decision because of the committed team of associates at the Easton Bakery,” said Rod Cunha, vice president, manufacturing for Bimbo Bakeries USA. “However, the age of this facility and its landlocked nature makes it incapable of competing effectively in the marketplace.”

Bimbo officials said employees at the Wilson plant are encouraged to apply for positions at a new facility under construction in Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., where 150 jobs will be available.

"We value our associates and encourage them to apply for jobs at the new Lehigh Valley facility," Cunha said in a news release.
