Macungie Borough Council appoints interim mayor to replace fmr. Mayor Hoffman
Macungie Borough Council selected Dr. Gary Cordner to act as interim mayor of Macungie until Dec. 31.
Cordner will serve the remainder of former mayor Rick Hoffman’s term following Hoffman’s resignation earlier this month.
With council members Hutchison and Walker absent, the motion to appoint Cordner passed 4-1.
Cordner has been a Macungie resident for nearly six years and served on the borough’s civil service commission. As a condition of his appointment, he had to resign that position.
He currently teaches criminal justice at Kutztown University and has his Ph.D. in social science and criminal justice from Michigan State University.
He has extensive law enforcement experience, including service as a police officer and police chief in Maryland.
Cordner is currently away in Ukraine but attended his interview via Skype. Two other candidates—Doris Horner and Ronald Conrad--also interviewed for the position, though Conrad recommended Horner for the job.
In his opening remarks, Conrad, who plans on running for mayor, cautioned council against choosing a candidate who would be on the November ballot so as not to influence voters in that election.
The single no-vote belonged to council member Jean Nagle, who agreed with Conrad and wanted to avoid giving one candidate an advantage over another come fall.
Cordner will assume his new position when he is sworn in later this month.
