ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

A 26-year-old North Whitehall Township man has been charged with attempting to rape a three-year-old girl early Saturday.

Steven Crespo, who resides in the 3000 block of Shankweiler Road in the township, has been charged with the indecent assault of a child less than 13 years old and corruption of minors.

He has been committed to Lehigh County Prison, unable to post $250,000 bail.

The crime occurred sometime before dawn Saturday at an Allentown residence.

A woman in the home told Allentown police she heard a scream and ran upstairs to find the unclothed defendant lying on top of the child in her bed. She pulled Crespo off the girl, whose pants and underpants had been removed.

The girl's brother also told policeĀ  he observed her kicking and screaming when the man was on top of her.

Crespo admitted to police that he tried to rape the child, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lehigh County Courthouse.
