A New Jersey man hit and choked a woman and cut his hand trying to grab a knife out of her hand when an argument over the hanging of a mirror turned physical, officials said.

Markius Lauture hit the woman in the throat and slammed her head into a wall after she ordered him to leave her apartment in the unit block of East Broad Street in Bethlehem at 1 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The woman grabbed a knife when Lauture wouldn't leave the apartment, and he cut his hand trying to take the knife away from her, officials said.

When the woman tried to call a family member, Lauture knocked the cell phone from her hand, and when the woman grabbed for the knife again, Lauture knocked it away, threw the woman to the floor and kicked her in the face, officials said.

After the woman went into a bedroom to call her cousin, Lauture threw her on the bed and put her in a sleeper choke hold, swung her off the bed and smashed her head into a mirror, officials said, adding that the victim finally escaped the choke hold and locked herself in the bathroom.

Lauture, 25, of 378 Lakeside Ave., Orange, N.J., was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault and harassment and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $7,500 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. May 24.
