A man who came home drunk hit his girlfriend several times with a metal broom after she fended off an attack, officials said.

James M. Devine began hitting his girlfriend on the arm with the metal broom in their home in the unit block of West Ettwein Street in Bethlehem around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, after she had grabbed him by the groin to make him let go of her hair, officials said.

The woman said Devine began pulling her hair when she tried to get around him to go upstairs, after he had come home "extremely drunk" and started arguing with her, officials said.

When police arrived, the woman had a scratch on her face as well as welts and bruises on her left arm, and the metal broom was found "bent and broken," with numerous pieces at the foot of the stairs, officials noted.

Devine, 33, was arraigned on assault and harassment charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $1,500 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 4.
