A shoplifter pulled up lame trying to outrun store security after stealing a bicycle and a backpack full of food, officials said.

Martin J. Schimmel ended up first in a hospital emergency room and later in a jail cell after he injured his foot while running away from the WalMart store 3722 Easton-Nazareth Highway in Lower Nazareth Township, Northampton Co., around 10:05 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Both Schimmel and another man were leaving the WalMart when they were stopped by store security, who had seen them hiding grocery items in a large backpack that Schimmel was carrying, officials said, adding that the men also each took a bicycle without paying.

Both men dropped the merchandise they had stolen, and Schimmel headed toward a nearby Applebee's, where he was eventually captured in the restaurant parking lot after hurting his foot, officials said.

The other shoplifter got away, they added.

The stolen merchandise was valued at $952.27, they noted.

Schimmel, 44, has no known address. He was arraigned on a felony retail theft charge because he has two previous shoplifting convictions, on Sept. 21 and 23, 2012, and a criminal conspiracy charge, according to court documents.

He was committed to the Northampton County Prison, but court papers do not list the bail amount.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 19.
