EASTON, Pa. -

A mentally ill man who fatally beat his mother and severely injured his father will be in prison for dozens of years.

Michael Lindgren, 51, was sentenced Wednesday to spend 25 to 60 years in state prison.

Lindgren pleaded guilty but mentally ill in August to killing his mother, 77-year-old Shirley Lindgren in their home at 209 E. Wall St. in Bethlehem.

The attack on August 21, 2012., also severely injured Lindgren's father, 79-year-old Ralph Lindgren.

Police said 20 minutes before the attack, Lindgren walked into the Bethlehem police headquarters and requested assistance. He became agitated and left without receiving help.

In court Wednesday, Lindgren's brother and sister-in-law testified that they blamed the man's doctors for not properly handling his mental issues, and that he'd had mental issues since high school. He was not on medication on the day of the attack.
