Donors urged to give blood

Students roll up sleeves at memorial blood drive 11th annual Angela Hohl Memorial Blood Drive at Daniel Boone High School on Tuesday.

Miller-Keystone Blood Center wants your blood. Now.

Officials said Monday the center's inventory of red blood cells has reached critical levels.

“The ideal blood inventory on our shelves should be approximately 1500 units,” explained Deb Otto, director of donor development.

“At this time, we are only at about 700 units. O-negative blood units and A-positive blood units are particularly low, at only 50% of our desired inventory levels,” she added.

Seasonal illnesses and the holidays often create a shortage of blood collections, Otto said, and the recent inclement weather further impacted the situation.

The weather forced postponement or cancellation of blood drives, and prevent many donors from keeping appointments at regional donor centers.

“More than 450 donors are needed every day in our community, to help in the care of premature infants, accident victims, cancer patients and others in need of life-saving transfusions at our regional hospitals," Otto continued.

“Blood cannot be manufactured, it can only come from the kind generosity of volunteer blood donors. If there was ever a time to donate, now is that time.”
