Miller-Keystone issues emergency appeal for donors
Blood center only 'a couple of traumas away' from depleting inventories
Miller-Keystone Blood Center has issued an appeal for donors of all blood types.
The center’s inventory of red blood cells is at historic low levels.
"We are a couple of traumas away from depleting our inventory,” warned Deb Otto, the center's tele-recruitment director. " If there was ever a time to donate, now is that time.”
“The amount of O-negative blood on our shelves is at 26 percent, which is dangerously low,” said Otto . “O-positive is at 50 percent, A-negative is at 43 percent, A-positive is at 76 percent and B-positive is at 60 percent. Our levels should be at least 100 percent.
“More than 500 donors are needed every day in our community, to help in the care of premature infants, accident victims, cancer patients and others in need of life-saving transfusions at our regional hospitals. Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from the kind generosity of volunteer blood donors."
Otto reported up to 50 units of blood are needed to help someone in a car accident, and up to eight units to help someone with internal bleeding. And up to eight units a week are needed to help someone battling leukemia.
In order to donate, individuals must be 17 years of age or older, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be feeling healthy; they must not have donated in the past eight weeks. All donors must also provide valid identification; ID must have the donor’s name printed on it, as well as a photo and/or signature.
Donors can find a blood drive online or visit one of the center's fixed site or satellite locations:
