The hunt for a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault in Monroe County ended hours later and miles away in an unusual place.

"I saw police come down the road, go to Slateford and all get out of their cars," said Sharon Hlwya.

The action Hlywa saw was centered just off Route 611, on Slateford Road, in Upper Mount Bethel Twp., Northampton Co. on Monday morning.

"I thought somebody was in the river," Hlywa said.

The man, whose name hasn't been released by police, wasn't in the river, but in the woods and on top of an abandoned train trestle. He was apprehended after a brief standoff with police.

It all began, police said, more than four hours earlier and about 20 miles north in  Middle Smithfield Twp., Monroe Co., where police said the man committed a burglary and rape around 6 a.m. Monday.

For reasons not yet clear, police said the suspect then drove to Slateford Road, ditched his Pontiac Grand Am and headed into the woods before his arrest.

For Hlywa, who runs a nearby roadside restaurant, it was certainly something outside her normally mundane Monday morning routine.

"I didn't like it in our quiet, little town. I didn't like him being here," she said.
