NORTHAMPTON, Pa. -

The Northampton Fire Department will soon see upgrades to the tune of more than half a million dollars.

Gene Zarayko, manager of Northampton Borough and secretary of the borough council, announced the awarded bids for the renovations and addition to the Northampton Fire Department at the council’s meeting on Thursday night.

The department, located at 1 Lerchenmiller Drive in Northampton, will undergo $545,586 worth of changes starting soon, according to Zarayko.

Miller, Miller and Miller won the general contracting bid with their $389,000 estimate.

$66,300 will be spent on the HVAC, $49,028 on fire protection and $41,758 on electric.

Zarayko explained that the total sum of the project exceeded his initial expectations, but that he would not have a hard time rearranging funds so to cover these expenses.

The groundbreaking ceremony at the Northampton Fire Department was held on Saturday, Oct. 12. Zarayko and several other council members attended the event, with many of them noting during Thursday’s council meeting how delicious the food was. Since ground was already broken for the project, it was expected that the council would approve the final bids, as they did unanimously.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski offered a summation of the borough’s farmer’s market from this past season.

“People from many other communities around are coming to visit are community, which again, I harken back to, we are sort of like a little bit of a trend setting municipality,” Lopsonzski said. “I personally think it can be something that can spark very good interesting things in the future.”

The council also agreed to provide traffic control for a motorcycle ride on November 2nd and offered October 26th as a tentative date for Penn State volunteers to hold their THON canning fundraisers at a few intersections in Northampton Borough.
