Northampton County judge nominated for U.S. District Court
U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey announced Thursday that Northampton County Judge Edward Smith was nominated by President Obama to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
"In his 11 years on the bench in Northampton County, Judge Edward Smith has presided over numerous civil and criminal cases," The Senators said in a joint statement.
Smith has also served as a military trial judge and presided over military proceedings throughout the world, according to the Senators. Smith's biography on Northampton County Court's webpage also indicates he is a Captain in the United States Navy.
Judge Smith will sit in the Easton courthouse. The Senators said that there has not been a sitting federal judge at that courthouse since 2004.
