The Parkland School District Board of Directors unanimously approved several contract and bids out of various committees for the 2014-2015 school year during Tuesday night's meeting.
In the big-ticket item of the night, directors awarded a bid to School Specialty, Inc in the amount of $262,456 for furniture and equipment for the Kratzer Elementary School.
The expenditure will come out of the district's Capital Projects Fund.
The board also extended the contract of Tustin Mechanical Services for HVAC services for one additional year through June 30, 2015, and to renew a nutrition and dietetics program between the district and Cedar Crest College from August 2014 through June 2015.
The board also gave the nod to Tyco SimplexGrinnell to install a burglar alarm system, card reader, cameras and door sensors at three elementary schools - Parkway Manor, Cetronia and Ironton - in the amounts of $30,146, $24,523 and $30,361, respectively.
Directors awarded more than $45,000 in bids for athletic equipment and supplies for the district's sports teams next school year, and doled out more than $12,000 in bids for technology education equipment and supplies.
The board also hired several teachers and support staff, primarily at the elementary school level, and appointed Director Robert Cohen to be the board's representative to the Parkland Community Library, through August 31,2014.
Cohen is filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Margaret Gabel.
While Tuesday night's business meeting had several votes, the emotional tenor of the evening was set by a workshop meeting earlier in the night in which the district officially recognized students and staff for outstanding achievements during the 2013-2014 school year.
"We appreciate their dedication and their investment in our students," said Director Barry Long, of district administrators and teachers.
Several directors also praised graduating seniors and the ceremony to mark their exit from the district..
The next Parkland School District Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 24th.
