Pickup driver who endangered people near Sands casino found with drug paraphernalia, police say
A pickup truck driver who endangered several people near the Sands Casino while trying to elude police was found with drug paraphernalia, officials said.
James Beasley was recognized by police as the pickup driver while he was walking near the 1800 block of East 6th Street in Bethlehem on Wednesday night, officials said.
Beasley had abandoned his pickup after a high-speed chase that began at 8 p.m., when an officer noticed he had an expired inspection sticker while Beasley was traveling on East 4th Street near Shimersville Road, officials said.
Police caught up with Beasley as he sped around the parking lot of Cigars International, 1191 Spillman Drive, coming very close to hitting a pedestrian, and when they tried to pull him over, he took off, ignoring several stop signs and a red light, officials said.
Beasley eventually drove to the rear of the Sands casino, endangering several people in the 100 block of Founders Way, and then abandoned his truck in the 1800 block of East 6th Street, after almost hitting a woman, officials said.
The woman flagged down police and told them Beasley had fled on foot, officials added.
When police encountered Beasley, he told them his name was Michael Delaney, but after a witness identified him as the man driving the truck, Beasley told investigators his real name, officials said.
When Beasley was searched, he was found with a plastic baggie used to store heroin in his right coin pocket and a syringe cap in his right pants pocket, officials said.
Beasley, 36, of 206 Clay St., Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co., was arraigned on 12 charges, including fleeing an police officer, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving with an expired inspection sticker and giving false ID to police and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 5.
