BANGOR, Pa. -

A man stole $1,700 from his brother's bank account by cashing 13 forged checks over a one-month period, officials said.

Andrew J. Ferguson cashed the checks bearing his brother Michael Ferguson's forged signature at various Merchants Bank branches throughout Northampton County from Aug. 11 to Sept. 11, officials said.

Michael Ferguson identified the forged signatures on the check as his brother's handwriting, officials noted.

Andrew J. Ferguson, 25, of the 500 block of Second Ave., Bangor, was arraigned Tuesday night on 13 counts of forgery and one count of receiving stolen property and released on $5,000 unsecured bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 19.
