Police chase fugitive over Easton rooftops
Arnell Garland cornered by U.S. Marshals
A man wanted on a state felony escape charge was captured after a rooftop chase in Easton.
Arnell T. Garland was taken into custody after being cornered on a rooftop of a home at 1054 Butler St., Easton, after a chase that began around 7:05 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Garland climbed out a third-floor window when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tried to serve a warrant on him. He had been holed up in an apartment at 1102 Butler St.
Garland then jumped on to the roof of 1056 and 1054 Butler with police in pursuit, but could go no further because of a large gap between 1054 and the next building, officials said.
Police tried to get Garland to come down from the roof, but had to go after him after getting a ladder.
Several tenants living in the buildings at 1056 and 1054 Butler St. were told to stay indoors and lock their windows and doors during the incident.
Garland, 25, of 835 West Berwick St., Easton, was arraigned on charges of escape, harassment and obstruction of justice and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 18.
