BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A drunk driver who injured her forehead after hitting a tree spit in the face of a paramedic treating her in an ambulance, officials said.

Jill Stewart was on her back on a stretcher waiting to be taken to the hospital when she cursed and then spit at paramedic Andre Brown, who was leaning over to treat her injuries after a crash at Center and Steinman streets in Bethlehem around 2 a.m. Friday, officials said.

When police arrived, Stewart was seen trying to hide behind a tree after her 2004 four-door Jeep Cherokee had crashed, officials said, adding that Stewart eventually admitted to being the driver of the SUV.

Police smelled alcohol on Stewart's breath, and her eyes were bloodshot and her gait was unsteady, officials said.

There was one passenger in the SUV with Stewart, Christopher L. Ramos, officials noted.

Stewart, 24, of 201 East Washington Ave., Bethlehem, was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault, DUI, careless driving and harassment and released on $2,500 unsecured bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 22.
