Officials say a man is facing charges for selling a $3,000 minivan he didn't own to a tow truck operator who sold it for scrap.
Mark Schaffer sold Claudia Morales' 2002 Chevrolet Venture to Joe Edinger of Commonwealth Asset Recovery Services, 1070 Applebutter Road, Bethlehem, for $150 sometime in September, officials said.
Schaffer told Edinger that the minivan was his, and made arrangements for Edinger to tow it away from a private parking pad at the rear of Morales' home at 701 Wood Ave., Easton.
Morales reported her minivan missing on Oct. 8, 15 days after it was towed away. By that time, Edinger had sold it for scrap to Shandor's Used Auto Parts in Phillipsburg, Warren Co., N.J., for $250, officials said.
Court papers say Edinger reimbursed Shandor's the $250, but do not say if Morales got back her minivan.
Schaffer, 55, of 1600 Washington Boulevard, Wilson, Northampton Co., was arraigned Saturday night on charges of theft and theft by deception and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $15,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
