A criminal attempt to gain access to a gas station's pump failed, according to Upper Macungie Township police.
Operators of the Top Star Gas Exxon gas station at 7739 Hamilton Blvd. in the township reported to police that one of its gas pumps had been tampered with and someone may have rewired the computer system around 10:45 a.m. Thursday.
A police investigation has determined no access was actually gained. Nor were any systems or users of the system compromised at the gas station.
The would-be thief apparently did make an attempt to open to pump's access door and in the process broke a piece of tape used to help secure that door.
Police report that "this additional security measure was installed at this location as a result of thefts and other fraudulent uses at nearby service stations, such as accessing customer card information or rewiring pumps to steal fuel."
Anyone with information on this incident or others like it is encouraged to contact their local police department.
