The power suddenly went out in central Allentown Wednesday night, momentarily plunging people attending a Lehigh County commissioners meeting into darkness.

As someone joked that the county did not pay its electric bill, the lights came back on, because the county government center just off Center Square has emergency generators.

But many others living in the city were not as fortunate when the electricity stopped flowing about 9:20 p.m.

About 5,000 customers initially lost power but most were restored by 10:30 p.m., said PPL spokesman Joe Nixon.

Nixon said the cause was traced to an equipment problem at a substation alongĀ  Front Street near Bucky Boyle Park in the city.
