PUC endorses UGI program, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski says it falls short
UGI says it's working to make sure its aging gas lines are safe, but some say the Reading-based company's plan doesn't go far enough.
The Public Utility Commission this week endorsed UGI's Leak Detection Pilot Program.
As part of the program, UGI will conduct quarterly surveys of its cast iron gas mains in Allentown between April and November, using traditional measures.
The company will then have to submit a written report on the results, but Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski said the program falls short of an order issued by the PUC in February, which required UGI to utilize enhanced leak detection measures instead of traditional ones.
The order stems from the deadly gas explosion at 13th and Allen streets in Allentown in 2011.
