TATAMY, Pa. -

A man hit his wife in the mouth when she got up after he had knocked her to the floor, officials said.

Robert W. Hand split his wife's lip when she got to her feet after he pushed her over a dining room chair, causing her to fall to the floor in their home in the 400 block of Broad Street, Tatamy, at 7:20 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Hand's wife suffered a bruise to her arm in the fall, and a glass and a plate were broken during the altercation, which happened about 175 feet from police headquarters, officials said.

Hand, 45, was charged with assault and harassment and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m. May 16.
