Superintendent J.W. Corby honored school board members of the Whitehall-Coplay District Monday for their years of service to the board, in celebration of School Board Appreciation Month.
During the first school board meeting of the New Year, nine elected members, who have collectively volunteered 111 years of service on the Whitehall-Coplay School Board, were honored.
Mr. Corby thanked the members for continuing to “inspire dreams and create opportunities,” for Whitehall-Coplay students.
School board member Eileen Abruzzi was individually honored for completing her 16th year of service on the board.
The nine members of the board approved all board representation and committee appointments for 2014.
The last school board meeting approved a motion to appoint J. Michael Malay, Jr. as Business Manager of the District for a term which will last until December 8, 2018.
Policies for Pupils, Student Discipline (218), Weapons (218.1) and Controlled Substances/Paraphernalia (227) and Employees, Tobacco Use (323) were submitted as first readings to the Education/Student Activities Committee and approved by the board.
The financial committee authorized refunds of the Whitehall-Coplay School District per capita tax and real estate taxes and exonerated numbers 268 to 1125 inclusive from the per capita tax to the Township of Whitehall.
The board also approved temporary professionals and salaried substitutes, including Jennifer Stancombe, who was in attendance.
Stancombe received a glowing administrative recommendation and was warmly welcomed by the school board to fill the role for high school special education inclusion.
Graduation for the Class of 2014 was approved and will be June 6 at 7 p.m. at Stabler Arena on the Lehigh University campus.
The next Whitehall-Coplay School Board meeting will be on Monday, February 10 at 7 p.m. in the administration building.
