PORTLAND, Pa. -

Some residents of the Northampton County borough of Portland will have their water turned off at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Portland Borough Authority is shutting off the water for about six hours to repair a broken water main.

The following areas will lose water: Portland Industrial Park and Trailer Park, Boulder, Bollinger and Morningside drives, Collins Avenue and Jones and Bruce streets.

Once water service is restored, a boil advisory will be in effect for those areas until further notice.

State officials recommend customers should boil all water that will be used for drinking, for washing food (if the food is not going to be boiled or otherwise cooked), or for brushing teeth and rinsing out the mouth.

Also, do not use ice made from the water.

The water should be brought to a vigorous boil and then allowed to boil for at least one minute before being allowed to cool in a covered container.

Clothing can be washed in the contaminated water and people can bathe in it "as long as you do not consume it. "
