WASHINGTON TWP., Pa. -

A struck gas line led to the evacuations of a shopping center and neighboring homes in Northampton County.

A contractor struck the line, which services the Capital Plaza shopping center on Blue Valley Drive in Washington Township, near Pen Argyl, late Wednesday morning, said Becky Esbach, a spokeswoman for Reading-based UGI.

The shopping center and a couple surrounding homes were evacuated, according to the Northampton County Communications Center, adding that evacuees were taken to the Blue Valley Farm Complex.

Natural gas service to the shopping center was also affected, Esbach said.

No injuries were reported.
