Three Allentown men have been arrested after trying to cash counterfeit checks from a car dealership at Walmart in Whitehall.

Charged were Gregory Robinson, Giovanni Hernandez and Antwan Anthony Scott.

The crime occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Walmart at 2601 MacArthur Road.

When Whitehall police responded to a retail theft in progress, they learned Robinson had concealed multiple knives that were valued at $96, which he did not purchase.

While police were investigating that retail theft, they also learned Robinson  had attempted to cash two counterfeit checks from Kelly Buick in the store.

One check was for $248.24 and the other for $246.89. Police contacted Kelly Buick to confirm the checks were counterfeit.

Robinson was with another man, identified as Hernandez. Hernandez left the store and walked out to a white Saab. Scott was in the driver's seat of the Saab.

Hernandez initially told police he did not know Robinson. Then he admitted that he and Scott took Robinson to the Walmart.  He said he went into the store to check on Robinson because he was taking too long.

Robinson told police Hernandez gave him the counterfeit checks, then Hernandez  and Scott took him to the Walmart. They promised to give him money to cash the checks.

When police searched the Saab, they found numerous other business checks with different names, which also appeared to be counterfeit. Among them was at least one additional Kelly Buick check made out to  Robinson.

The 31-year-old Robinson lives in the 400 block of W. Tilghman Street in Allentown. He was charged with forgery, retail theft and conspiracy to commit forgery.

The 31-year-old Hernandez lives in the 1300 block of Fountain Street in Allentown. He was charged with forgery, attempted theft by deception and conspiracy to commit forgery.

The 32-year-old Scott lives in the 500 block of W. Cedar Street in Allentown. He was charged with forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery and unlawful possession of a controlled substance -- a small amount of cocaine

Preliminary hearings are  scheduled for  2 p.m. Wednesday for Robinson, 2:15 p.m. Wednesday for Scott, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for Hernandez -- all before Magisterial District Judge Robert Halal, 3678 Crescent Court in Whitehall.
