Another Lehigh County police department has joined forces with a crime data website to track crime--and residents can see what's going on in their neighborhood too.

Upper Macungie Twp. police department is the latest agency in our area to sign up for crimemapping.com, which provides information on crimes across the country.

It's a great tool if you plan to move, because you can track the crimes in a prospective neighborhood.

Any resident with access to the internet can map out and analyze recent crime activity in their neighborhood.

The site includes 15 types of crime most requested by the public, and include such incidents as robbery, assault, burglary, vehicle break-ins and thefts.

According to Upper Macungie's criminal investigations commander Lt. Wilson, "Community-oriented policing is a trend that is here to stay and the Upper Macungie Police Department intends on keeping the public well informed."

"We believe that a well-informed public has been proven to be effective in reducing crime. Additionally, this transparency helps build trust and it is our hope that these additional steps will help our residents look out for each other and help the department solve crimes," he added.

South Whitehall Twp., Bethlehem and several communities in Berks County also use the resource.

It's also available for use on your smartphone.
