Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman is borough's top law enforcement officer, court rules

MACUNGIE, Pa. -

A Lehigh County mayor has scored a legal victory in a feud with his police department.

A Commonwealth Court Thursday upheld a previous ruling that said Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman is the borough's chief law enforcement officer.

That means Hoffman is allowed to have control of the daily operations of the department.

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin appealed the ruling, saying Hoffman should not have access to sensitive information.

The dispute started in 2011 when Hoffman suspended the chief after the chief refused to hand over police work schedules.

The chief said Hoffman was motivated by his son's arrest for suspicion of DUI.
