A Lehigh County man is facing assault and DUI charges following a one-vehicle wreck along Route 145 earlier this year that left a 1-year-old with severe head trauma that will likely be permanent.

Authorities charged Shawn D. Reed, of the 700 block of Front Street in Catasauqua, with aggravated assault by vehicle, driving under the influence and reckless endangerment in connection with the June 4 wreck in North Whitehall Township. He also faces a handful of summary traffic violations.

District Judge Rashid Santiago arraigned the 23-year-old Tuesday night, setting bail at $20,000.

Pennsylvania State Police with the Bethlehem barracks responded to a single-vehicle wreck about 10:10 p.m. along northbound Route 145 just north of Clearview Road. A trooper found Reed’s Mazda Tribute flipped onto the passenger side along the southbound embankment, according to court records.

Police said Reed was laying behind the vehicle on the embankment. He and his 1-year-old passenger, who suffered a severe head wound, were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for treatment. Court records do not specify the nature of Reed’s relationship to the child.

Authorities allege Reed’s eyes were watery and bloodshot and that he had “slow, thick, slurred speech.” Medical staff at the hospital drew blood and test results returned in July showed THC, the active chemical in marijuana, in Reed’s system.

Doctors told police that the 1-year-old sustained severe head trauma in the crash that will likely impede the boy’s neurological and motor functions as he ages.

Reed failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Oct. 18.
