Man who admitted stealing from soccer club issues apology
Some might call it public humiliation. A former youth soccer club official stood in front of members Thursday night and issued a court-ordered apology for siphoning more than $100,000 from the club.
Parents and players for Tri-Boro Soccer Club in Whitehall were eager to start their annual clinic at the high school. But one man, standing away from the crowd, was there for something else.
For six years Brian Farley served as the organization's treasurer.
"I'm extremely sorry and embarrassed by everything that happened," he said into a microphone.
The 55-year-old was found guilty last month of stealing $120,000 from the soccer club. Thursday he faced the hundreds of families and children who's trust he betrayed.
"I'm a parent and you try to be a good example to your children, and what I did it was one of the worst examples I could set for your children to see," Farley said, keeping his eyes on the ground.
The public apology was court ordered, along with five years probation, and paying back the money he stole. While the players worked on their passing and dribbling at the Tri-Boro Family Fun Night, parents had mixed emotions about Farley's confession.
"It was forced," shared Don Prince. "I think he's sorry, but I think he's more sorry that he got caught than anything else."
"I think he was sincere, I hope so," added Christine Kypridakes. "There really wasn't too much of a buzz after his apology, so I think everyone's still a little hurt."
"A lot of parents, I guess feel betrayed by what had happened," explained Gloria Wong.
Farley says he used the hot cash to pay bills. He's already paid about half of the stolen money back, and is working to find a job so he can return the rest.
"There's no excuse for what I did," he explained. "No justification behind any of it."
"This is a lesson learned," described Tri-Boro Soccer Club President Tino Babayan. "Just watch who handles your money."
The soccer club has taken steps to make sure this doesn't happen again.
