Mayor looks to build on city's success of 2011

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

It may look like Bethlehem -- the Lehigh Valley's Christmas city -- opened all of its gifts last year.

The opening of ArtsQuest, the SteelStacks and many restaurants could lead some to believe it will be a quiet 2012.

Not so fast, said Mayor John Callahan, D-Bethlehem, who was tight-lipped on some upcoming projects because the deals are not complete.

You can bet on the ArtsQuest SteelStacks campus growing a little more, he said.

Callahan said hopes to see even more development on the south side of Bethlehem in 2012.

"Liberty Property and Trust has broke ground a couple months ago on a 1.2 million square foot logistics center in the old Bethlehem Steel site, in LVIP 7," said Callahan. "That's projecting somewhere between 400 and 500 jobs."

There is no tenant for the building that will have a projected cost of $20 million.

That's not the only new construction people will see, Callahan said.

"There's some ideas and some projects in the works right now," said Callahan. "Nothing I can announce just yet publicly. I'm confident that 2012 will see real significant progress on sort of the western end of the SteelStacks campus."

In February, the Shoppes at the Sands Casino will grow from nine stores to 22.

Then in May, Callahan said he feels more tax dollars will be pumped into the city when the Sands Casino events center opens.

On the north side, the mayor said he plans to revisit the redevelopment of the Martin Tower site, a project that was voted down when the Bethlehem school board wouldn't agree to tax incremental financing

"There was a new election, and elections have consequences," said Callahan. "It looks, on the surface, with the new board members that have come on board, they've got, at the very least, an open mind towards hearing about the TIF."

As for festivals, Callahan is hoping the weather will be better for Musikfest.

He said it will still be split between the north side and south side because, from what he can tell, merchants on both sides benefited from the change.
