More than 600 athletes raced, jumped and competed in the Special Olympics in Lehigh County Friday at Whitehall High School in Whitehall Township.

Organizers say the event for athletes with special needs isn't just about winning medals.

"It's an opportunity for them to come out and be a part of something exciting. You can see if you look around all the smiles and the faces of the athletes, they look forward to the day and we love hosting it," said Harry Schwartz, the manager for the Lehigh County Special Olympics chapter.

This event is just one day, but the group says it does offer year-round programs.
