Navigating the new health care site
It's been just about three weeks since the enrollment period started for insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act, but it's been headache after headache for people trying to log on.
Michael Hitcho of Hanover Township near Bethlehem has been running into several roadblocks since October 1. He wants to get onto healthcare.gov to learn about options for his family's coverage when their current plan is cancelled in 2015. He also is trying to help his clients because he is a self-employed insurance advisor. He explains different plans to clients and helps them choose which plan is best for them.
"I was really upset at the whole system for the fact that we've had years and years and years to work on this," said Hitcho. "The whole system just doesn't feel like it was ready."
"There are many individuals in the area that lose coverage January 1 and with the way the system is currently running, healthcare.gov, I'm getting anxious for them," he said.
"It took me several days to finally create an account," he said, but he hasn't gotten much further than that. "When I go on and try to apply, I haven't been able to apply."
When 69 News visited him Monday, not only could Hitcho not see any plan information once he logged, he couldn't even access one of his client's accounts because the page wouldn't load.
He said, "If I can't even do it for myself and research the plans, how am I going to be able to do it for them?"
Hitcho tried to create an account for his wife and only got through the first few steps before he got a message that said the account couldn't be created and the system is unavailable. He clicked on the "live chat" option and there was a quick response, but when he wrote he was having trouble, the response thanked him for his patience and suggested he try during off-peak hours and keep trying.
Hitcho said, "Hopefully we'll have luck soon, get a little further."
69 News has heard from several other people who are having problems with the system both over the phone and online.
