BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Bethlehem police are investigating what led to a shooting that left Joseph Rodriguez, 25, dead.

It happened early Sunday morning in the 800 block of Argus Court, a housing project not far from the Sands Casino.

Neighbors say Rodriguez was shot at the complex playground, then stumbled down the hill and collapsed at the foot of a tree.

He was taken to St. Luke's hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour after police found him.

Neighbor and childhood friend of Rodriguez, Nicole Nieves says it's hard to believe.

"I knew him, I knew him very well....He was cool, he was a cool guy. Always into sports always hanging with friends, with his kids,” she said.

Just across the street, Therese Alvarez who also knew Rodriguez since he was child, says a deadly shooting is the last thing anyone ever expected.

"My husband said he heard 'boom boom boom' and he thought it was fireworks, when he looked out the window he didn't see nothing so he went back to bed," said Alvarez.

Now neighbors say they're hoping police will increase patrols through the area, to avoid another tragedy.

"They should have cameras too, put cameras up. They did it out at the Pembroke village, they should do it here....It hurts, for someone that I knew, watch him grow up, 25 years old...that's young," said Alvarez.

An autopsy has been scheduled to take place Tuesday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bethlehem police.
