BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

The days of waiting in line minutes before midnight to get that beloved postmark are over.

“Our staffing has been depleted over the last couple of years through retirement and attrition and we just don't have people to stay open 'til midnight like we used to,” said John Conahan with the Lehigh Valley Post Office.

Conahan says the last time Post Offices in our area were open until midnight was a few years ago however he's surprised that the office hours weren't at least extended for the tax filing deadline.

“I'm a little bit surprised, I thought maybe we'd be open until 8 p.m. but again I can see why. I mean if you don't have the people you don't have the people,” said Conahan.

The automatic kiosks that are open 24/7 are another option but the machines will only be postmarking the 15th until 8 p.m.

“If you arrive after 8 o'clock, you're going to be out of luck getting the 15th on your tax return and that could be bad,” said Conahan.

Taxpayers can also file for an extension online and fill out the 4868 form found on the IRS website.

However if you file the extension electronically, you must also file your tax return electronically, unless you've mailed in the extension with the appropriate postmark.
