NORTHAMPTON BOROUGH, Pa. -

Some residents are pushing for a "No-Kill" animal shelter in Northampton borough.

A petition with about one thousand signatures was presented to the borough council tonight.

It asks for a shelter that does NOT kill animals to be built in the borough.

The organizer of the petition drive, Dawn Pearl, says there's a large stray cat population in the borough.

"It helps the county. It helps the borough. It helps the community and it helps the animals.," said Pearl.

Council-members say they want to examine some tax issues and logistics before possibly moving forward.

The borough had a no-kill shelter before that closed in 2007.
