A man is facing charges after admitting to police he stole a shopping cart loaded with laundry detergent to support his drug habit, officials said.
Angel L. Torres, accompanied by a female, took 10 150-oz. containers of Tide worth $192.90 from the Giant food store at 3926 Nazareth Pike, Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday, officials said.
Police found Torres after a store employee gave them the license plate number of a gold Chevy Malibu used by a man and a woman who twice tried to shoplift Tide from the store, officials said.
Torres told police he acted alone and did not know the identity of the female who was with him, officials said.
Torres was convicted of retail theft six times from 1996 to 2011, officials said, adding that he is on parole from his most recent conviction.
Torres, 30, of 633 Fiot St., Bethlehem, was arraigned Monday night on a retail theft charge and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $3,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 19.
