Talk about bad luck! In just one week, a Northampton Co. couple saw both of their cars totaled. It happened on the same icy street, and now they're calling on Bangor Borough to improve its snow removal.
Cindy Kelton's got a nice new ride, but it's not the one she wanted.
"It's not my car," she said. "That's why I'm upset."
She's driving a rental car. Kelton's car was totalled after someone skidded down her icy street.
"A man went to go get his child from the day care, came down, and smashed right into my car," said Kelton.
But her accident was just the beginning.
"In five days, two cars totalled," she said.
A few days later, someone plowed into her husband's truck, causing more than $2,000 in damage.
"I was just in disbelief," she said.
According to neighbors, this stretch of South Fourth Street has been dangerous for years.
"Very, very slippery," said Joan Kantor, who has lived on the street for 35 years.
Mail carrier Jeff Roberts said he's had plenty of scary moments too.
"A couple of times -- just my mail truck, my work vehicle -- I couldn't stop it coming down this hill," he said.
Kelton is hoping to convince the borough to devote more resources to this risky road.
"It's just low budget," she said. "They don't have the money to be sending out all these people all the time to be maintaining these roads."
Borough Manager John Kasten told 69 News he wasn't aware of the problem until now, but he promised to look into it. And good news could be on the way. Bangor's snow removal budget has gone up for 2013, up to nearly $40,000.
Kantor believes the borough is doing what it can.
"They are usually out pretty good, I would say, getting it cindered or plowed," she said.
Meantime, Cindy Kelton just hopes, when it comes to wrecks here, the third time won't be the charm.
