School event helps students strengthen their muscles, minds

WIND GAP, Pa. -

How much can you bench press? It's not the typical academic question, but it's a way for one local school to get kids on the right learning track.

DeVaun Jackson set the deadlift record of 480 pounds at the Colonial Academy in Wind Gap, Northampton Co.

"Made sure everyday I worked out, kept my fitness to be healthy," said Jackson, 16, who is part of the school's annual power lifting competition.

"A lot of esteem building has taken place through the lifting," said counselor Francis Felix.

The high school gym became the setting for a no-holds barred showdown as students chalked up, stepped into position and pushed their bodies to the limit.

It may seem like unconventional education, but it's part of the curriculum at the alternative school, whose students have issues that don't necessarily fit into a traditional school, officials said.

Thursday's exercise even included students heading from the gym to the classroom to practice upcoming PSSA testing questions..

"[Lifting] tires us out, so we're a little more focused and want to do better," said 11th grader Camron Fahr.

The two-day event also included the bench press. Points were earned by how much was lifted and how many correct questions were answered. Trophies were then awarded.

Jackson said he's been preparing for more than a month.

"If you have education, it makes you more stronger in mind, mentally," he said.

Felix says Jackson is a perfect example of a student setting a goal and staying disciplined.

"He's been able to put his energies into something instead of negative-based activities," Felix said.
