Cedar Crest students teaching about cyberbullying

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Cedar Crest College students are taking a role in educating local schools about the dangers of cyber bullying.  They performed an original play for the first time Saturday that addresses the topic.

The play is called "About Face' and it focuses on a group of middle school girls who are involved in a very cruel, but very real incident of bullying over the internet.

The 45 minute show is about issues that usually go unnoticed.

A group of 8th grade girls plan to lure a so called "geek" out to meet a boy.  Only to make fun of her instead.  And it all goes down online.

"People don't realize what they're actually doing is bullying and the ramifications of how that affects people and what can happen afterwards," explained Director Clair Freeman.

Cedar Crest Performing Arts Chair Roxanne Amico penned the play after she discovered there was nothing out there that dealt with cyber bullying and would work well as an assembly for middle schoolers.

"We wanted to have characters in the play that would represent different kinds of students, students who were instigators, students who were joiners, students who were on the fringe and didn't want to be left out," said Amico.

A small group came out to watch the premier performance.  Parents in the crowd tells us it was informative and has a message that needs to be heard.

"They really think that everybody is their friend and they don't take into account that there are people out there that really want to hurt them and don't have their best interest at heart," said parent Lauren Ganser.

Ganser also said teens and parents need to realize that this is happening, and they could be the victim or the bully.

"As long as there's no parental controls and parents aren't involved in what their kids are doing it's gonna happen," she said.

Starting this week the play goes on tour.  'About Face' will be performed for sixth, seventh and eighth graders at six local schools.
