Police: Woman sets fire to home with husband, kids inside

EASTON, Pa. -

A woman is facing charges for allegedly setting her house on fire and leaving her family inside.

Police and firefighters were called to 761 Mauch Chunk St. in Easton before 11 p.m. Monday.

Huma Khan, 26, started the fire after she had an argument with her husband, police said.

She wanted him to get off the computer and start cleaning the house, but he refused, said police.

"She walked out of the room pretty upset with him, said she was going to burn the house down and came back into the room with a rag that was lit on fire, showed it to him," said Lt. Scott Casterline, Easton Police Dept. "He didn't really take the action she wanted him to take, so she then threw the lighted rag on the couch."

Khan then ran out of the house, leaving her husband, two children and a house guest to fend for themselves, police said.

When officers arrived, Khan reportedly told them the fire started because she was smoking and fell asleep. The truth later came out.

Neighbors said the couple have had their share of squabbles before, but they never thought it would come to this.

"Definitely needs some help, and I hope they get it for her," said neighbor Patrick Smith. "I think she needs to do a little time or something at least."

Khan was charged with arson, risking a catastrophe, endangering the welfare of children (two counts) and four counts of recklessly endangering another person.

She was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $75,000 bail.

No one was injured in the fire, which did only minor damage to the home, officials said.

Northampton County Children and Youth Services has been notified of the incident.
