SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. -

A vehicle struck a pole on Mauch Chunk Road in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, causing power outages in the vicinity Monday night and traffic headaches Tuesday morning.

A Chevrolet Lumina traveling west on Presidential Drive around 10 p.m. crossed over Mauch Chunk Road, struck and went through the guide rail, leaving the road, police said.

The vehicle then struck and split a utility pole and went down an embankment, coming to a stop in a field.

South Whitehall Township Fire and Rescue had to extricate the driver from the vehicle, police said.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Due to the extensive damage to the utility pole and guide rail, officials said Mauch Chunk Road will be closed for approximately 12 hours.

PPL officials said power outages affected about 1,700 customers in the area, but power was restored by Tuesday morning.

There's no word on the conditions of the victims.

Officials said Mauch Chunk is closed between Girard and Schadt avenues. This closure compounds a traffic problem since an alternative to Mauch Chunk Road -- Cedar Crest Boulevard -- is also closed for a construction project.
