Seven people at Jetson Specialty Marketing Services Inc. (JSM), a direct mail facility at 9775 Commerce Circle, in Weisenberg Twp., Lehigh Co., north of Kutztown, were exposed to a substance that was initially thought might be harmful, emergency dispatchers said.
Emergency crews from Berks and Lehigh counties began responding to the scene around 2 p.m. after a worker opened either a letter or a package and became exposed to a black, granular substance, said officials.
The emergency dispatches continued for more than 90 minutes after the first crews arrived on location, calling several ambulances and fire crews to the scene.
Workers were evacuated from the building while the seven people, one of whom became sick, were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, said officials, who later determined that the substance posed no harm to anyone.
The FBI is handling the investigation to determine whether there was any criminal wrongdoing involved in the incident.
Jetson Specialty Marketing, in business for nearly 60 years, is a privately owned and operated direct mail manufacturing company located near the New Smithville exit of Interstate 78, according to its website.
