PALMER TWP., Pa. -

Police in Palmer Township, Northampton County, are investigating an IRS scam involving iTunes gift cards.

Police said a resident reported receiving a call on Monday from a man who stated he was from the IRS and taxes were owed.

The caller said the amount needed to be paid or he or she would be arrested. The resident was told to buy iTunes gift cards and provide the numbers to the caller.

The person bought $3,500 in gift cards and gave the caller the numbers, according to police.

Police said the IRS will not call a taxpayer without first sending an official notice by mail. They are telling the public not to buy gift cards or talk to scammers on the phone.
