Hundreds of Red Cross workers, including some volunteers from our area, are helping those affected by Hurricane Matthew and you can help too with just a simple text from your phone.
"This particular storm just spread in such a large area and with all the rivers rising, we've been discussing this non-stop 24 hours a day since the storm before it even impacted Haiti," says Deborah Pollock of the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
26 volunteers from the Lehigh Valley have been deployed to help victims of Hurricane Matthew; 18 in South Carolina, four in Florida, three in North Carolina, and one in Georgia.
However, Pollock says none of it can be done without money. "We can't do that without funding, there's a lot of supplies, the vehicles, and time to get down there."
If you'd like to donate you can simply text 'matthew' to 90999 and that will donate $10...enough to provide three meals and a blanket.
"It is one of our larger scale events for this year so that's why we're really getting the word out," said Pollock.
So far, the Red Cross has served close to 400-thousand meals and snacks and provided more than 82,000 overnight stays in shelters. That's more overnight stays than after Superstorm Sandy.
