PHILLIPSBURG, NJ -

A Wednesday morning accident caused a truck to spill diesel fuel on Route 22 east in New Jersey. Officials closed the road for more than two hours.

The accident happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Phillipsburg Police said a tractor trailer driven by Mohinder Singh, 31, of Richmond Hill, NY, tried to turn the truck around at the Route 22 east off ramp in the area of n. Main Street and the off ramp.

Singh's truck ran over a curb and ruptured the gas tank, which spilled around 106 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway.

Workers placed absorbent material on the highway to absorb the spill. Police officials noted that none of the fuel spilled into any catch basins.

Police said the absorbent was removed and the highway was reopened around 4:30 a.m.

Singh was cited for careless driving.

Responding to the call were: the Phillipsburg Fire Department, Phillipsburg Department of Public Works, New Jersey State Police, New Jersey DOT, and the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Authority.
