Upwards of 100 police officers from around the Garden State and the Lehigh Valley gathered in Alpha New Jersey. They came to honor the life and service of Phillipsburg Police officer.
Bobby Amey's death wasn't sudden but it was slow. Cancer took down this 9-year vet. The 35-year-old died Tuesday, after a two year battle with Leukemia.
"We were over at his house last Sunday watching the game. Seeing him with Hunter, he pretty much knew it. Bob did," long time friend Terry Merante shared with us.
This time, Hunter, Bob's one year old son, was on his mom's knee, as she was handed a folded American flag.
"He was a natural for the job, he knew when to be stern, when to be compassionate," Phillipsburg Police Chief Joe Faulborn said.
Bobby didn't battle cancer alone. His fight brought the community together.
Blood drives and fund raisers were held.
In 2010 Bobby accepted a signed jersey from then New York Jet's wide receiver Braylon Edwards
Just this past September Christina Wilson, a childhood friend and reality TV chef winner cooked Bob dinner during his recovery.
In the end this was a fight Bobby couldn't beat. But one many will always remember.
Bobby is survived by his wife Nicole, son Hunter and step-daughter Haylee.
